I’ve heard Kelpies are impossible to tire out, is that true?
Kelpies, like most heading breeds, were developed to work stock for, up to, 10 hours a day, so if you’re trying to tire a Kelpie out through exercise, you’re in for a long day and you’ll probably fall over before the dog. If you really want to tire a Kelpie out, you’ll need to mentally stimulate them. What works best is a half hour training session or a “Sniff Walk” at a park on a 5 meter lead.
My Kelpie is destructive, what can I do to fix the problem?
If your dog is under 12 months old, it will be a bit destructive, it’s a part of their development, and making sure there are plenty of toys for them to chew-up and destroy is important, and will save your furniture. If you have an older dog, they will normally only become destructive if they are bored. Again here having some toys for your dog is important, so is spending time with them as is training. Failing all that, a second Kelpie will help by giving your dog a playmate to keep the entertained, and away from your furniture.
People keep saying I should adopt from a shelter and not buy from a breeder, is this correct?
While adopting a dog from a shelter can be very rewarding, there are some risks involved, including:-
- You don’t know the dogs’ lineage and therefore any history of genetic disease. Most registered and licensed breeders do a number of health checks on their dogs before they are breed from and at a minimum you’ll be given, the kennel names of the parents and you’ll also be given the opportunity to meet the parents before committing to buying a puppy. Also when buying from a breeder, you’ll always have a person you can call on to answer questions about your dog.
- If the dog you are adopting a mixed breed dog, you can never really know what breeds are in the mix, so the cute little puppy you see in the pound, may have a giant breed in their lineage, or even a dangerous breed in there too. Buying a pure breed dog, you know what you’re getting.
Why are Kelpies so good looking and all other dogs are just meh?
Sorry we don’t know the answer to that either. Maybe because, like all things developed in Victoria, they just are inherently beautiful or maybe it’s just the will of the gods, who can really say?
